Frappant is dat - net zoals bij Lenaís schoonouders - haar zes zonen volwassen werden. Zij kwam zelf uit een gezin met 13 kinderen (waarvan er twee jong overleden); zes meisjes en zeven jongens. Lena was een achternicht van Johannes via de Haasnoot kant. Haar vader was landbouwer.
