Notes about Harmen Johannesz VERLOOP


Hij was timmerman en had een "metselaffaire" in de Baljuwstraat. Hij werd in 1845 voor de Hoofdelijke Omslag aangeslagen in de 4e klasse. Hij was diaken (1837-1839) en gasthuismeester/regent (1858-1861).

Harmen Verloop uit Katwijk aan Zee schreef in 1859 een verzoekschrift aan de koning over een vermeende slepende borstziekte van zijn zoon Dirk, die volgens hem het gevolg was van angst voor het kazerneleven. Hij vroeg voor zijn zoon alsnog een plaatsvervanger te mogen stellen nadat de termijn daarvoor eigenlijk al verstreken was. Blijkbaar dacht hij met zijn argument een kans te hebben en hij kreeg de steun van de behandelend arts van Dirk, die verklaarde dat de ziekte grotendeels werd veroorzaakt: door melancholie daar hij de naderende indiensttreding met angst tegemoet ziet. De commissaris van de Koning in Zuid-Holland gaf een helder advies over het antwoord op het verzoekschrift: doch ik vermeen dat vrees voor de dienst geen voldoende redenen oplevert om de verlangde plaatsvervanging toe te staan. De minister van Oorlog stuurde er desondanks nog wel een inspecteur van de geneeskundige dienst op af, die meedeelde: dat bij een ingesteld nauwkeurig geneeskundig onderzoek niet is gebleken dat Verloop aan eene borstziekte lijdende is. Het zal weinig verwondering wekken dat de autoriteiten geen toestemming gaven voor de plaatsvervanging.
