    Scherprechters in de negentiende eeuw
    Tot de afschaffing van de doodstraf waren er functionarissen nodig die de feitelijke straf voltrokken. De doodstraf was de zwaarste sanctie die zij uitvoerden. Maar de beulen executeerden ook publiekelijk andere lijfstraffen. Het beroep stond niet in hoog aanzien.
    De beoefening ervan bleef mede daardoor beperkt tot een klein aantal families die vaak aan elkaar verwant waren. Dit geldt bijvoorbeeld voor de families Aenhout/Anholt en Snijder/Schneider.
    In 1851 werd aan alle scherprechters ontslag verleend, omdat de voltrekking van deze straf niet meer uitgevoerd werd.Op dat moment, 1851, werd de staat van dienst van degenen die ontslag kregen opgemaakt. In het archief zijn gegevens te vinden over de loopbaan van H. van Aanhout, Hermanus van Aanhout jr. en Johannes van Anholt (respectievelijk vanaf 1800, 1844 en 1840).
