Cornelius A. Huisman
Cornelius "Cornie" A. Huisman, age 74 of Lynden, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 4, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Visitation hours will be from 1 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6, at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden.
Graveside services will be at 1:15 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, in Monumenta Cemetery followed by funeral services at 2:00 p.m. in Faith Reformed Church, 7th & Liberty streets, in Lynden with Revs. Paul VanMaaren and Julius Brandt officiating.
Cornie was the son of Aart and Elizabeth (Vander Vaate) Huisman and was born in Lynden on March 12, 1931. He graduated from Lynden High School in 1949 and then served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was married to Gertrude Veldhuizen in Lynden on August 3, 1956, and together they operated a poultry farm on the Huisman Place. Cornie also drove school bus for the Lynden School District for 46 years, retiring in 2001.
Mr. Huisman was a member of Faith Reformed Church in Lynden where he also served as a Deacon and Sunday School treasurer. He enjoyed going to coffee at the Rusty Wagon and visiting his friends at the Lynden Senior Center.
Besides his parents, Cornie was preceded in death by his brother, Peter Huisman, and is survived at home by his wife, Gertrude; children Juanita and husband Martin Verbree and Marlae and husband Dan Nieuwsma of Lynden and Glen A. Huisman of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren Richard C. Verbree, Rachel and husband Oystein Hernes, Jessica and husband Brian Stuart, Lance and Tana Nieuwsma and great-granddaughter Elliana Stuart and numerous other relatives.
Memorials may be made to Faith Reformed Church, 612 Liberty Street, or to the Lynden Community Center, 401 Grover Street, both Lynden 98264.
