Notes about Paulus Gijsberti

Paulus Gijsberti was ontvanger der convoyen en licenten ter admiralteit op de Maas te Lommel [1]. Bij ondertrouw wordt vermeld: Paulus Gijsberti, jongeman, wonend te Delft, Hester Hodenpijl, jongedochter, wonende te Schiedam (DTB Delft inv. 82, folio 50v, archief.delft.nl)

Paulus Gijsberti wordt beweerd de onwettige, natuurlijke zoon te zijn van Thomas Beresteyn en Alida Tromp, kleindochter van Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp (1598-1653) [1]. Hij zou in Amsterdam Hervormd gedoopt zijn, in de Oude kerk, op 23 maart 1703 als Pauweles, zoon van Gijsbert Poulsse en Alida de Clair. Getuigen waren Abraham van Veen en Jacobus Wassenburg. De pastor was Hero Sibersma (Hervormd doopboek Oude kerk, 15 p. 171 (folio 86) nr. 2; stadsarchief.amsterdam.nl).

Door de maker(s) van de kwartierstaat van Anna Maria Josephina Candel wordt echter aangenomen dat Paulus Gijsberti een paar jaar later is gedoopt, in de Westerkerk, in Amsterdam 10 juni 1707 als Paulus, zoon van Paulus Gijsberts de jonge en Ida Amsterdam. Getuigen waren Paulus Gijsberts en Susanna Vliethooren. Pastor was Otto Brandtz Swalmius (Hervormd doopboek Westerkerk, 109 p. 137 (folio 69) nr. 12; stadsarchief.amsterdam.nl).

Over de eventuele (onwettige) afstamming van Paulus Gijsberti van Maarten Harperszoon Tromp is een polemiek gevoerd in het genealogisch tijdschrift De Wapenheraut [1903, bl. 272 en 1904, bl. 81, 137, 187, 191, 196, 379]. Helaas heb ik deze werkjes nog niet kunnen inzien. M.G. Wildeman schrijft in 1920 in het Jaarboek van de Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde (http://www.dbnl.org/tekst/_jaa003192001_01/_jaa003192001_01_0015.php) : "Het staat thans historisch vast, dat de stamvader der familie Gijsberti Hodenpijl, Paulus Gijsberti, een zoon was van Mr. Thomas van Beresteyn bij diens ongehuwde schoonzuster Alida Tromp, kleindochter van Maarten Harpertsz. Tromp en zuster zijner vooroverleden echtgenoote Dina Cornelia Tromp. Het overlijden van de moeder in het kraambed heeft een mogelijk voorgenomen huwelijk belet, waardoor Paulus dan gewettigd zou zijn geworden." Ook referentie [1] komt tot dezelfde conclusie. Ik citeer (blz 88-89):

Thomas van Beresteyn, Heer van Maurick, geboren te ’s-Hertogenbosch 8 april 1647, overleden op Maurick 19 maart 1708, kapitein in Statendienst, Rentmeester der geestelijke goederen in de kwartieren Kempenland en Oisterwijk en van het kapitel Oirschot, Raad van ’s-Hertogenbosch, verwekte, na het overlijden van zijn echtgenoote Dina Cornelia Tromp, een natuurlijken zoon bij hare zuster Alida Tromp, die op Maurick haar intrek had genomen. Te Amsterdam geboren, werd deze zoon ald. ged. en ingeschreven als Paulus Gijsberti (voornamen van grootvader en overgrootvader van Thomas van Beresteyn), terwijl bij den doop verdichte namen van vader en moeder werden opgegeven. Het wapen, dat Gijsberti aannam, bestaat uit de stukken van het wapen van Tromp, keper en lelie, doch anders geplaatst.
