    Isabella stond bekend om haar schoonheid en was een bekwame regentes tijdens Karels veelvuldige afwezigheid wegens verplichtingen elders in zijn uitgestrekte rijk.

    Karel en Isabella waren zeer op elkaar gesteld, wat onder koninklijke echtelieden niet zo veel voorkwam; Isabella's dood heeft Karel diep getroffen.

    Ten tijde van haar dood was hij, zoals zo vaak, op reis.

    Hij kleedde zich voor de rest van zijn leven in het zwart en hertrouwde niet.
    Hij verwekte in 1547 nog wel een tweede onwettig kind, Juan van Oostenrijk.

    In 1522, voor zijn huwelijk met Isabella, had hij al een onwettige dochter verwekt, Margaretha van Parma. Heel waarschijnlijk heeft Isabella ook tijdens haar huwelijk vele minnaressen moeten tolereren.

    De verbintenis van Isabella met de Spaanse koning heeft voor haar vaderland grote gevolgen gehad.

    Haar zoon Filips II had via haar zekere rechten op de Portugese troon. In 1580 ontstond er een opvolgingscrisis in Portugal, waarop Filips zijn recht deed gelden.

    Omdat Portugal helemaal niet verenigd wilde worden met Spanje, zette Filips zijn aanspraak kracht bij door zijn vertrouwde houwdegen, de oude Hertog van Alva, op te laten marcheren naar Lissabon. De personele unie van Spanje en Portugal zou zestig jaar duren.
