Name: Peter Flickinger Sex: M Birth: 13 AUG 1730 in Rhine Palatinate, Bavaria (LDS-Switzerland) Death: 10 SEP 1807 in Lewisburg-Sunbury (Buffalo Cross Roads),Union Co., PA Reference Number: 12607 Note: Notes from FTM Vol 24 #0836Tree Name: Flickinger, Ehrlich, LaubhanAccording to the printed archives of the colony of Pennsylvania, he was enrolled at Rotterdam in Holland as a Palatine (a resident of the Rhine Palatinate in Bavaria, between Alsace-Lorraine and the Rhine, this being in the southwest part of Germany). This was one of the localities boldly and vigorously pressed by Luther in the 16th century.Peter sailed on the Edinburg, an English vessel with James Russell as Captain, and it's last stop before the shores of the colonies was Portsmouth, on the south coast of England.Peter arrived at Philadelphia and took the Oath of Allegiance Sept. 4, 1753. This was six years before the French Indian Wars and 23 years before the Declaration of Independence.Peter lived along the Schuylkill River, near Reading or Pottstown. While Peter lived in Berks Co., PA, he engaged in boating between Reading and Philadelphia. John Wonderlich (Wonderly), who came with him to this country was his assistant in this boat traffic business. The public records indicate that in 1768, Peter entered for settlement a tract of land in union Township, Berks Co., PA He was living along the Susquehanna during the winter 1777 when the British army invaded Eastern PA The British army defeated the smaller army of George Washington at Brandywine Creek and Germantown, causing the Continental Congress to withdraw from Philadelphia to Lancaster.Peter's losses from the war proved irreparable. They put an end to his boat business along the Schuylkill River and his investments became worthless as were the bills of credit. Evidently he also lost the tract of land in Berks Co., PAPeter married Mary Derr (Dehr/Dare) and they migrated to the new frontier west of the Susquehanna, then protected from the Indians by the garrison at Ft. Augusta in Northumberland co. (later known as Buffalo Twp., Union co., in the vicinity of Sunbury). They were too advanced in years to regain their lost fortune. It is said that Peter had a habit of looking on the bright side and made the best of any situation. He spent the rest of his days on the new frontier a short distance northwest of Sunbury, in Northumber- land Co. PA until he died at the age of 77 in 1807. He was one of the first settlers in Buffalo Twp. to receive the rite of Christian burial.Cynthia Lynn Chapman Law's DAR application lists Peter (the Immigrant)'s birth place as Alsace-Lorraine. and states that he served as a private in Capt. John Robinson's Co. in October 1781, County of Berks, PA. He is also on the Depreciation Pay List of Berks Co. Militia, 5th series Vol. 4 pg 258 Union Twp, 1779, 3rd series Vol. 18. He came on the ship Edinburg - see Strassburger's Emigrants, page 524. (This would make him 51 years old when he was in the service!)
