Citaat SHFJ Kerris (pa) in 1974: Mijn vader huwde op 27-2-1908 met Helena Catharina Wenders uit Vaals, Tentstraat 31. Hij woonde in het oude huis Vijlenberg 44, toen nog Vijlenberg 13. Dat huis moet al een paar honderd jaar oud geweest zijn en vermoedelijk altijd in het bezit van de fam. Schins. Na grootmoeders dood kregen mijn ouders de beschikking over het hele huis, dat echter nog niet gekocht werd. Vader liet er wel een kamer bijbouwen, achter het huis. Die gebruikte hij als werkkamer voor zijn kleermakerij, want inmiddels was het gezin ook al groot geworden. Wij huisden in de keuken, terwijl de rechterkamer zelden of nooit gebruikt werd. Typisch ouderwets gebruik - in de "goede kamer" werd niet gewoond. Alleen met kermis,communiefeesten en andere feesten en als de familie op bezoek kwam, was deze kamer in gebruik.Mijn vader is vele jaren lid en bestuurslid van de harmonie in Vijlen geweest. Hij speelde eerst bugel en later trompet. Van hem heb ik dat instrument ook leren bespelen, d.w.z. ik hoefde alleen maar de grepen te leren, de rest heb ik mezelf geleerd omdat ik door mijn studie genoeg muziekkennis had om dat te kunnen doen. Verder heeft hij nog bestuursfuncties gehad in de Coöperatie en het toen bestaande Armenbestuur te Vaals. Verder heeft hij ook meegespeeld in toneelstukken zoals "Het lijden van Christus" en "der Brant va Bellent" Hij hield erg van kaarten en ons huis stond bekend als kaarthuis waar vele avonden tot aan vader's dood gekaart werd en waaraan wij graag meededen.
