Notes about Dirk Stooker

Het echtpaar woonde van 6-8-1891 tot 8-4-1892 te Strijen (Mookhoek).
Dirk Stooker nam het caf "de koepel" over van zijn vader Teunis, later had hij een caf aan Boven Havendijk 60, de voormalige praktijk van dokter Bossers, naast het pakhuis van Smaal. In de krant van 09-08-1916 is gepubliceerd dat door hem vergunning is aangevraagd "tot verkoop van sterke drank in 't klein in het pand nabij 't Veer, get. A 105. Binnen 2 weken kunnen bezwaren hiertegen worden ingebracht." Een ander krantebericht meldt het volgende: "Dinsdag 27 januari 1920 te ruim zes ure brak er brand uit in een perceel, bewoond door vier gezinnen, waaraan een groote schuur, met riet gedekt, verbonden was. In de schuur bevond zich hooi, stroo, kaf enz. De brand is in de schuur ontstaan. Al heel spoedig waren door het kleppen der klok de spuitgasten en de spuit bij de brand aanwezig; hier is het bewijs al weder geleverd welke goede diensten de motorspuit heeft verricht, daar de vier woningen, welke aan de schuur stonden vastgebouwd, behouden zijn gebleven. De straal water, welke de motorbrandspuit gaf, was ontzettend. De belendende gebouwen, zooals het kantoor van A. Smaal en het caf van D. Stooker, waarvan de ruiten door de warmte waren gesprongen, zijn behouden gebleven. De brand was na verloop van 2 uur totaal gebluscht. De oorzaak is onbekend, assurantie dekt de schade." Toen het autoverkeer toenam maakte Dirk Stooker een parkeerplaats naast het caf, door telkens bij laagwater in de haven zijn kruiwagen vol te scheppen en een stuk van 10 meter lengte tot de bovenkant van de dijk op te hogen. Dit alles met de hand !
