Op 29 april 2006 konden we in dezelfde krant lezen over de afloop van het assisenproces.

«Het West-Vlaamse hof van assisen heeft vrijdag de 45-jarige kok Jos Heyman-Dewitte uit Roeselare veroordeeld tot 30 jaar opsluiting voor doodslag en aanranding. Dat is de maximumstraf. De man vergreep zich op 9 maart 2003 in Roeselare midden in de nacht aan de 19-jarige studente Charlotte Van Walleghem. Ze verzette zich en werd gewurgd. Het meisje was een toevallig slachtoffer.
De beschuldigde heeft het hele proces volgehouden dat hij zijn slachtoffer pas benaderde toen ze hem spontaan "vetzak" toeriep. Maar zelfs zijn advocaat, Filip Van Hende volgde hem niet. Dat hij haar werkelijk dood wilde, betwijfelde de advocaat wel. Daarom liet hij de jury de kans voor "opzettelijke slagen en verwondingen zonder het oogmerk om te doden maar met de dood tot gevolg" te kiezen.»
«Heyman-Dewitte was niet aan zijn proefstuk toe. Hij werd al eerder veroordeeld voor zedenfeiten. Het aantal straffen met uitstel stapelden zich op. In 2002 zat hij drie maanden in de cel. Zijn drang om een vrouw te betasten, kon hij echter niet bedwingen. Op 9 maart 2003 liep het bij Charlotte Van Walleghem fataal af. Er werd niet onmiddellijk een bewijs tegen hem gevonden. Daarom liep hij nog vier maanden vrij rond. In die periode randde hij op 23.05.2003 nog een vrouw aan in Izegem. Voor die feiten werd hij eerder al veroordeeld.»
«Volgens een berekening van het openbaar ministerie zou de man over zeven jaar kunnen vrijkomen. De openbare aanklager had de maximumstraf gevorderd. "Een kleine groep mensen is echt gevaarlijk", gaf hij de jury en het hof voor hun beraad mee. De jury hield bij haar beoordeling rekening met de zwaarwichtigheid van de feiten, het zware strafverleden van de beschuldigde en het onnoemelijke leed dat hij de nabestaanden van de jonge vrouw aandeed.»
