Notes about Peter Hubert Gubbels

Peter Gubbbels was 12 years old when the Gubbels family left the Netherlands for America--sailing on the Plymouth Rock from London, England to New York, New York, where they arrived on May 15, 1862. The Gubbels family settled in Jamestown Township, Grant County, Wisconsin, where in 1870, the U.S. Census lists Peter as age 21, works on farm, in the household of his father John.
In 1874, the Gubbels family moved to Shelby County, Iowa, where they farmed in Cass and Westphalia townships. In 1880, Peter, age 30, farmer, was listed in his brother Jacob's household in Westphalia Township.

Peter Gubbels [is] an enterprising and prosperous farmer of Cass Township ... [The Gubbels family] came to Shelby County, and settled on wild land, which they have brought to a high state of cultivation. The brothers own 160 acres in section 2, Cass Township; they have improved 480 acres since coming to the county. Their home place has a large dwelling, a good barn, a windmill, a grove and an orchard. The brothers agree in politics, all being Democrats. They are intelligent men, good neighbors and successful farmers. They are strictly honorable in business and have the confidence of the community. They are members of the Roman Catholic church. ... [They] are jovial, genial boys.
