De kinderen zijn na het overlijden van de moder (neem ik aan) in een weeshuis in Kormmenie terecht gekomen. Daar zijn de jongens uitgehaald om in het Franse leger van Napoleon te dienen. Hendrik en Cornelis zijn meegegaan op de veldtocht naar Rusland en daarna is er nooit meer iets van ze vernomen. In de familie wordt er gesproken van de "uitlandige Hein en Cees". Klaas sr. was in het leger trommelaar (tamboer), die de troepen naar de grens bracht. Zodoende heeft hij dit overleefd.
