In 1947 trouwde ze met haar geliefde Wim van den Boogaard, nadat zijn eerste vrouw, die niet wilde scheiden, was overleden.

Omstreeks 1926 valt Clare als een blok voor de elf jaar oudere Wim van den Boogaard. Wim werkt als kok bij de Utrechtse Kromhoutkazerne. Hij is getrouwd en gebrouilleerd met een vrouw die niet scheiden wil. Wim doet daar overigens ook niet erg zijn best voor, zelfs al noopt zijn overspelig samenzijn met Clare het gemeentebestuur om haar als onderwijzeres te ontslaan.
