Twee Huwelijkse Proclamatien gaan, getrouwt den 4 April 1784”

Vanaf 1684 werd het kofschip op een van de vele scheepswerven in Workum gebouwd. Het is een vrachtschip dat de kusten van de Oostzee, Noordzee en Middellandse zee bevoer. De reizen begonnen in februari-maart en voor de najaarsstormen kwamen ze terug. Ze voeren heen met bakstenen, dakpannen en ander aardewerk, als ballast. Uit Portugal en Spanje kwamen zout en citroenen terug. Bordeaux leverde wijn, meestal voor het hof in Petersburg. In de Oostzeelanden kwam, tarwe, rogge, gerst, vlas, hennep, potas en teer aan boord. Het ijzererts kwam uit Zweden en het hout uit Noorwegen. En in Engeland werd er wol en steenkool geladen.
't Kofschip was in het begin een klein schip, maar om steeds meer goederen te kunnen vervoeren, werd de vorm steeds plomper en zwaarder, en de roef en luiken bleven kwetsbaar bij stormen. De afmetingen van de kof zijn rond 1690, 48 voet lang, 11,5 voet breed en 3,5 voet hol. Een Workumer-voet is 0,325 m lang, 12 voet = 1 roede. In 1759 liep een kof van stapel van 100 voet. Dit was aan de werf van de gebroeders Kingma aan 't Sylspaed en dit was het eerste schip in Workum dat gebouwd werd vanaf een bouwtekening.
De koffen hadden zwaarden. In 1739 bouwde Rein Douwes Molenaar de eerste kof zonder zwaarden, waardoor dit type kustvaarder minder kwetsbaar was in ruw water. In 1747 bouwde Rein Douwes een driemast galjoot van 105 voet lang, 25 voet breed en 14 voet hol. De koffe en de galjoot waren nauwelijks te onderscheiden. In 1702 wordt een te bouwen schip dan ook beschreven als "coffe of galjootschip". Rein Douwes Molenaar was werfbaas op een werf aan het Súd in Workum, waar nu nog een pakhuisje staat met een mooie gevelsteen, daarachter is een onbebouwde plek.
