    Hij begon in 1885 aan een opleiding tot horlogemaker en goudsmid in Drachten en was daarna
    werkzaam als bediende in Leeuwarden, Leens, Kollum en Leiden. Op 13 september 1892 vestigde hij
    zich zelfstandig als horlogemaker-juwelier in Drogeham-K ooten, hij had zijn zaak in de
    gereformeerde pastorie die wegens vertrek van zijn ouders leeg stond. Op 13 mei 1897 werd de zaak
    verhuisd naar Kollum. Op 1 mei 1927 werd de zaak overgebracht naar Hoogeveen (Hoofdstraat 101,
    een pand van Jochem Blanke n). In 1934 verhuisde hij naar de van Echtenstraat 11a (thans 13/13a,
    in de zijgevel van dat pand zit een gevelsteen met de tekst "Hilda 16-2-34"), waar in 1937 een
    optiekafdeling aan de zaak werd toegevoegd. De overstap van Kollum naar Hoogeveen ha d te maken
    met het feit dat de zaak in Kollum te veel werk met zich meebracht, het werkterrein was te breed
    geworden: uurwerken, goud en zilver, brillen, fietsen en autoverhuur. In Hoogeveen werd de zaak
    beperkt tot juwelen en uurwerken. Later werd d oor zoon Koen daaraan optiek toegevoegd. Na het
    besluit tot verkoop van de zaak in Kollum werd besloten dat zoon Albertus de zaak over zou nemen,
    hij was daarvoor werkzaam geweest op een gemaal en als bewakingsambtenaar in penitaire
    instellingen te B alkbrug en Veenhuizen.
    Hendrik Zomer was fractievoorzitter van de Anti Revolutionaire Partij (ARP) in de gemeenteraad van
    Kollum. Lange tijd werd in Kollum, na zijn optreden terzake in de gemeenteraad, op de wijze van
    "Zie de maan schijnt door de wolken" gezongen:
    Zomer heeft zijn zin gekregen, want de drankwet is er door.
    Leve Zomer, hoor zijn brullen bij het vrome Christenkoor.
    Nu komt niemand dank zij Hein
    's nachts meer dronken bij zijn Trijn.
    In opdracht van caféhouders had een schilder de ramen van de winkel besmeurd, de schilder was door
    verfsporen snel opgespoord, de boete werd door de caféhouders betaald.
