    Enfant, il aime le dessin. Il peint onze arrangements floraux peints pour l'anniversaire de son père, et on voit bientôt qu'il avait du talent. Il consacre beaucoup d'attention à ce passe-temps et étudie peu. Et il a de mauvaises notes à l'école. Il est inscrit à l'Académie des Beaux-Arts de Rotterdam. Il y étudie entre 1882-1884 et il apprend à dessiner à partir de moulages en plâtre des statues classiques. Ses études de cette période ne sont pas conservées. En 1884, il s'inscrit à l'Académie royale des Beaux-Arts d'Anvers. Il est inspiré par les théories des symbolistes français, qu’il a tour à tour transformées en peintures et dessins. Il rejoint l'atelier de B. Constant en 1888 eainsi celui de Puvis de Chavannes à Paris. (informatie Jean-Marc Blanc)
