Hendrik werd geboren in Nieuwer-Amstel, maar al snel verhuisde het gezin naar Laren NH. Hij ging naar de Gooische school in Laren en later naar de Gemeentelijke HBS in Hilversum aan de Schuttersweg. In de derde klas ging hij van school en voegde zich bij zijn broer Herman en zuster Hermina (Miep) in de Tintol verffabriek aan de Papaverweg 1C in Amsterdam Noord. Begin jaren vijftig deed hij in de avonduren de studie voor belastingconsulent, die hij succesvol afrondde.
