Notes about Antonius "Antoon" van Hekken

Occupation: Sailor, factory-worker, farm-worker, suitcasemaker, carpenter

On 04-12-1938 Antonius was summoned to undergo a medical check by the National Army, was declared fit to serve, but was exempted to serve due to so-called 'brother-service', meaning the obligation te serve had already been fulfilled by an older (half)brother (Johannes Antonie).

From May 1943, halfway through WW2, all men between the age of 18 en 35 were obliged to report for work in Germany (Arbeitseinsatz). Those who failed to report were punished and from October 1944 massive roundups were held te arrest men that escaped work in Germany. The last big roundup dates January 1945.

On 11-13-1942 Antonius applied for a German passport to be used for his forthcoming forced labour in Germany. On 11-16-1942 he picks up the passport, receives 30 Dutch Guilders for clothing, and was transported the next day (11-17-1942) via concentrationcamp "Kamp Amersfoort' to Frankfurt am Main in Germany and was forced to work for the company 'Telefon und Normalzeit GmbH'.

Antonius somehow managed to escape the forced labour because on 05-23-1944 at 15.45 hours he was arrested at the Hoofdweg in Amsterdam by a policeman from station Admiraal de Ruyterweg in Amsterdam, charged with escaping the forced labour in Germany. He was taken to the concentrationcamp in Amersfoort again, was imprisoned there from 06-01 till 06-14-1944 and transported thereafter to Wilhelmshafen (Nedersaksen) in Germany and was forced to work for the company 'GAA Weser-Ems'. Eventually Antonius was released and returned home to Amsterdam.

On 09-14-1949 Antonius emigrated with his wife to Melbourne (Victoria-Australia), returned to Amsterdam on 11-27-1961 but re-migrated (aboard mv. Favia' - departure 09-14-1964 and arrival Sydney 10-21-1964) to the village Fernhill/Corrimal in NSW at he address: 13 Meads Avenue, about 77 kilometers south of Sydney.

Prior to his last emigration Antonius worked as a carpenter (1962-1964) for the building-company 'Firma R. Schrik' located at 197, Bestevaerstraat in Amsterdam. Upon his resignation he came aware of the fact that son Roelf of the building-contractor (author of this family-tree) would travel to Australia a month later (departure 12-09-1964 from Rotterdam by mv. 'Aurelia') for a working holiday.

Antonius, his wife and daughter Hanna picked up Roelf at Sydney Harbour on 01-17-1965 and offered a warm welcome to their house. Roelf stayed there for about 6 weeks before moving on, destination Wollongong (NSW).
