In het park Rijnstroom aan de Raadhuisstraat van Alphen aan den Rijn was van 1895 tot de zeventiger jaren van de 20ste eeuw de Martha-Stichting gevestigd. Het begin van de Martha Stichting vinden we in Amsterdam. De onderwijzer Cornelis Geel is in 1870 benoemd tot evangelist met als werkterrein de Jordaan. Daar stichtte hij een christelijk tehuis voor ontheemden. Later begon hij een bewaarschool voor ‘vervuilde’ kinderen. In 1882 legde hij contacten met een hoofdonderwijzer in Nieuwveen, die ook een tehuis voor dergelijke kinderen had geopend. In 1883 werd de “Vereniging Martha-Stichting voor onverzorgde kinderen” opgericht.

Snelle groei

Door de snelle groei van het aantal kinderen is een pand aan de Julianastraat in Alphen aangekocht. Toen door de verbreding van de Rijn een gedeelte van de tuin van het pand zou verdwijnen was het wenselijk om uit te zien naar een andere ruimte. In 1895 werd daarom de buitenplaats “Rijnstroom” aan de Lage Zijde onder Aarlanderveen gekocht en nadat er was verbouwd en bijgebouwd kon er in 1897 worden verhuisd. Door de voortdurende groei van het aantal jongens en meisjes was uitbreiding noodzakelijk. Na de aankoop in 1906 van de naastgelegen boerderij met 20 hectare grond volgde de bouw van bijgebouwen. De tuinarchitect Copijn uit Groenekan ontwierp een park waarin de gebouwen konden worden opgenomen. Het oude en grote park achter de buitenplaats “Rijnstroom” werd hersteld en vergroot.
