    Geschiedenis Wervershoof

    Over het ontstaan van de plaatsnaam Wervershoof bestaan een aantal versies. Voor velen is de vernoeming naar de hoeve van de prediker Werenfridus de meest geliefde. Werenfridus was volgeling van Willibrord en kwam naar het gebied in 690 om het woord van Willibrord en zijn evangelie te verkondigen. Hij woonde destijds in een hoeve in het latere Wervershoof.

    De plaats wordt in 1288 als banne Werfaertshof genoemd op een landkaart. Maar het verhaal van Werenfridus heeft nog steeds veel navolgers. Ook is zowel de kerk als parochie gewijd aan de H. Werenfridus. Ook de kerk die er vroeger stond was al gewijd aan hem.

    Het inwonersaantal schommelde tussen de 250 en 400. Het aantal groeide nadat het in 1817 een zelfstandige gemeente werd. In 1868 waren er bijna 800 inwoners. De gemeente zelf werd toen vergroot met Hoog- en Laag-Zwaagdijk en had toen zo'n 1600 inwoners. Het dorp bleef een tijd ongeveer gelijk qua aantal inwoners.
