    Zonnestraal, Nederlandsche Vereeniging tot het oprichten van Arbeidskolonies voor Tuberculoselijders in Nederland. In 1905 werd door Jan van Zutphen het Koperen Stelen Fonds opgericht. Met de opbrengst van de door de diamantslijpers gebruikte koperen stelen en van de diamantstof die uit het slijpsel werd gewonnen werd in 1919 de Stichting Sanatorium Zonnestraal in Hilversum mogelijk gemaakt.

    Begin vorige eeuw maakt tuberculose veel slachtoffers, vooral onder diamantslijpers. Het enige medicijn in die tijd is veel rust in combinatie met licht. Met dat doel voor ogen ontwerpt architect Jan Duiker sanatorium Zonnestraal in Hilversum, dat op 12 juni 1928 opent.

    In 1957 werd Sanatorium Zonnestraal een gewoon ziekenhuis. In 1982 wordt het gebouw door Monumentenzorg in ere hersteld.
    Sanatorium Zonnestraal wordt gezien als een voorbeeld van de stijl het Nieuwe Bouwen, dat in het begin van de 20ste eeuw opkomt.
