Johan Bernard sterft in 1966 is ongehuwd gebleven en laat een legaat na van acht miljoen gulden om het J.B. Scholtenfonds op te richten, waaruit vele culturele en wetenschappelijke activiteiten kunnen worden bekostigd. Uit dit fonds worden later ook de kosten betaald van het reusachtige grafmonument van de familie op de Zuiderbegraafplaats. Hij is o.a. eigenaar van de boerderij die wordt gepacht door dhr. Hiemstra, die veel over de familie Scholten heeft kunnen vertellen, waardoor er veel verhalen zijn overgeleverd.
