Priester, woonde in 1668 in Luik. Gaf een weeshuis aan de stad Hasque. Stichtte een studiebeurs. Lid OLVbr. Zoals het toen betaamde voor rijke mensen had de familie van Hilst oog voor liefdadigheid. Zo werd het meisjesweeshuis bedacht met belangrijke legaten door priester Gerard van Hilst, die in Hasselt overleed op 5 november 1729. Hij stichtte eveneens een studiebeurs die een arme Hasselaar moest toelaten godgeleerdheid, wijsbegeerte, rechten of medicijnen te studeren. - Gerard van Hilst: geboren in 1652 werd hij op 26 augustus 1679 opgenomen in de Virga-Jessebroederschap, waarvan hij in 1686, 1697, 1701, 1709 en 1717 deken werd en waarin hij meermaals andere bestuursfuncties vervulde. Op 5 mei 1711 schonk hij een huis aan het weeshuis, opdat jongens en meisjes er gescheiden zouden worden. Hij overleed op 5 november of 4 december 1729, na zijn jubileum van 50 jaar priesterschap en 50 jaar lidmaatschap van de Broederschap gevierd te hebben.
