Notes about Sijmen Jansz Schermer

Sijmen Jansz bracht de zaak van zijn vader tot grote bloei. Naast de fabricage van droge verfstoffen bedreef hij de handel en import van chemicalien, waaronder potas en weedas uit Polen en Rusland via de havens van Dantzig en Koningsbergen 

t-size: small;">Weedas, werd de zeer zuivere potas (kaliumcarbonaat; vergelijkbaar met natriumcarbonaat=soda.) genoemd, die de linnen en bombazijn blekers graag gebruikten om er het lijnwaad in uit te koken (wassen) alvorens het te bleken werd gelegd. Weedas was beter maar ook veel kostbaarder dan de "gewone" potas.
