Matthijs kon niet schrijven en ondertekende de acten met een handmerk in de vorm van een handboog. Dit wordt ge llustreerd aan de hand van het contract van Peter Michiels uit Ranst die in naam van Wommelgem in het Franse leger met 'peert en kairre' dienst ging doen. De andere handtekening is van Adriaan Goormans, Heilige Geestmeester in Wommelgem.
