Notes about Frans Gerritsz van den Berg

In het jaar 1784 gaat Frans van den Berg failliet. In de 2e helft van de 18e eeuw had de boerenstand het verschrikkelijk moeilijk als gevolg van lange perioden met veeziekten. Dit leidde tot de uitroeiing van veestapels. Had je pech, dan hield je geen koe meer over. Dit lot heeft Frans waarschijnlijk ook getroffen. Zijn zwager Dirk Duivenvoorden was al drie maanden eerder failliet gegaan. Frans en Pieternelletje pachtten jarenlang een boerderij van de abdij van Leeuwenhorst. Deze stond naast de kruising van de Gravendam ('s-Gravendamse weg) met de Maandagse Wetering in Noordwijkerhout. Frans verliest bijna 100 dieren aan de runderziekte en raakt in financiele problemen. De beheerders van de Leeuwenhorst goederen zijnde de Ridderschap Holland/West-Friesland hebben het in die tijd zelf ook uitermate moeilijk omdat menig boer de pachtlasten niet meer op kan brengen. Zij kunnen niet anders dan Frans en Pieternelletje failliet verklaren en hun boedel veilen. Het documentje uit het Nationaal Archief is door een derde persoon opgesteld, de inhoud laat de smeekbede van Frans en zijn vrouw zien om de executieveiling tegen te houden.
