Notes about Johannes Bernardus Janszoon "Jan" Beencken

Jan was net als vele streekgenoten uit Duitsland gekomen. De verschillende oorlogen daaar, vooral de Zweeds-Duitse oorlog (1756-1763), hadden vele verwoestingen aangericht in de streek rond Osnabrück. Bezittingen en landerijen waren in een puinhoop veranderd. Er heerste armoede. Vele mensen trokken naar Holland om daar wat geld te verdienen of om een heel nieuw bestaan op te bouwen. Jan was, net als zijn broer Gerrit, geboren bij Löningen. Het was een katholieke streek, en er werd een dialect gesproken dat veel op het Nederlands lijkt. De oudere mensen spreken het nu nog.
Als jonge man van een jaar of 25 moet Jan met zijn broer Gerrit ook richting Holland zijn getrokken en uiteindelijk in Heemskerk terecht zijn gekomen, ongeveer rond het jaar 1780.

Jan oefende zijn beroep waarschijnlijk uit als rondreizend kleermaker. Bij de mensen waar hij werk vond, bleef hij ook wonen. Dat moeten welgestelde mensen zijn geweest, die het zich konden veroorloven maatkleding te maken. Zo is hij waarschijnlijk ook terecht gekomen bij de familie KAASENBROOD in Heemskerk.

Door het erfdeel van zijn echtgenote Antje KAASENBROOD kon Jan op 5 juni 1799 voor f 400,- een stuk teelland kopen, genaamd de "Lange Akkers" (ten noorden van de huidige Breedslaglaan), groot 1.805 roeden.
