Nico is zijn kruideniersloopbaan begonnen in 1936, met 10 gulden in zijn zak en een oude fiets. Zo begon de opbouw van zijn wijk.
Op 14 mei 1946 neemt hij een verlopen kruidenierszaak op Lijsterstraat 37 te Haarlem over met een omzet van fl. 200,-- per week, hij betaalt dan voor de goodwill en inventaris fl.900,-- en de aanwezige handelsgoederen worden tegen factuurprijs overgenomen.
Spoedig steeg de wijkomzet tot fl. 700,-- per week.
In 1961 kon hij 3 panden kopen, zijn winkelpand en de 2 woningen aan beide zijden, de winkel werd verbouwd tot 60 vierkante meter en ingericht als zelfbedieningszaak. Omdat er geen opvolger was is hij op 59-jarige leeftijd gestopt met de zaak, hij heeft daarna nog een paar jaar bij Figee gewerkt.
