Gerrit Veldman wordt geboren op 9 januari 1868 te Nieuwe Niedorp. Hij is het vierde kind en de eerste zoon in een gezin waar uiteindelijk 14 kinderen geboren worden. Als jongeman werkt hij enige tijd in de uitspanning van het etablissement Het Gulden Vlies in Alkmaar. In die tijd wordt nog veel met de koets gereisd en hij is belast met de zorg voor de paarden. Overigens bestaat Het Gulden Vlies sinds 1561 nog steeds, momenteel als Grandcafé-Restaurant.
In Het Gulden Vlies ontmoet hij Maria Alida Buren; zij heeft uit onvrede met het tweede huwelijk van haar moeder het ouderlijk huis verlaten en is een nichtje van de eigenaar van het Gulden Vlies, Cornelis Pepping. Op 28 april 1895 trouwen Gerrit en Maria en kort daarna neemt Gerrit, als oudste zoon, in Nieuwe Niedorp de boerderij over van zijn vader, die op 26 november 1894 op 53-jarige leeftijd is overleden. Maria Alida, die aan TBC lijdt, sterft nog in het kraambed op 19 juli 1898.

Op 22 oktober 1899 hertrouwt Gerrit met Trijntje de Wit. Het huwelijk vindt plaats in Nieuwe Niedorp en niet in Zijpe, de woonplaats van de bruid. Dit kan erop wijzen dat de ouders van Trijntje de Wit niet zo enthousiast zijn over de keuze van hun dochter, aangezien Gerrit een weduwnaar is met twee jonge kinderen. Verder is er een leeftijdsverschil, 22 en 31 jaar, en zijn de de Witten grotere boeren dan de Veldmannen. Omdat Gerrit met zijn paarden voor zijn talrijke broers en zussen veel hand- en spandiensten moet verrichten, besluit hij te vertrekken naar Alkmaar. Op 1 mei 1901 verhuist hij met zijn gezin naar Koedijk, aan de noordkant van Alkmaar.
