Jacobus vertrekt in mei 1936 naar Den Helder om bij de marine te gaan. Van daaruit vertrekt hij op 24 mei1938 naar Soerabaja. Jacobus, die ongehuwd bleef, is bij zijn overlijden machinist.
Bij de Slag om de Javazee op 27 februari 1942 werden drie Nederlandse schepen, Hr.Ms. Java, Hr.Ms. Kortenaer en Hr.Ms. De Ruyter tot zinken gebracht door de Japanse vloot. 915 marinemannen vonden daarbij de dood.
