    Toen in 1939 de mobilisatie uitbrak had defensie besloten, dat op het weiland achter een boerderij een luchtdoelbatterij moest komen voor bescherming van Schiphol als een oorlog uit zou breken. En zo kwamen er drie stukken geschut op het land te staan en zorgden 110 soldaten voor een invasie in Bovenkerk, die voorlopig op de zolders van de boerderij en de stallen moesten verblijven tot dat er aan de overkant van de weg barakken waren gebouwd.
    Toen op 10 mei 1940 in de vroege morgen de oorlog uitbrak en Schiphol werd gebombardeerd, bleek dat de stukken geschut daar onbeschermd stonden, en blijkt uit verhalen van bewoners van de Dignahoeve, dat ze met een aantal jongens uit de buurt op een legerwagen naar het in aanlegzijnde Amsterdamse bos gingen om zakken met zand te vullen die om de stukken geschut werden gelegd.
    De soldaten weerden zich zodanig, dat de Duitsers het nodig vonden om op 14 mei met drie vliegtuigen de batterij te bombarderen om deze uit te schakelen. Dit is niet gelukt daar de bommen op nabijgelegen gebouwen en woonhuizen terecht kwamen, waarbij drie soldaten en een vrouw om het leven kwamen en enkele soldaten gewond.
