De Zuidlaardermarkt was voeger ook al een grote drukte. Er kwamen veel enterpaarden,
soms wel honderd, uit Zuid-Drenthe, die dan vaak zondag en maandag in de wei stonden.
Dinsdagochtend vroeg moesten die paarden dan weer worden gevangen. Maar dat ging zo
maar niet. Die werden aan elkaar gebonden en kwam er een paard voor te trekken,
want ze waren onwillig schrijft Pieters. Dat was een beste tijd voor kastelein Jacob van
Rein van cafe De Vriendschap, want voor paarden moest weidegeld worden betaald en de
mensen moesten warm eten hebben.
