In 1912/13, de periode rond het huwelijk van zijn vader met diens tweede vrouw,heeft Piet tijdelijk in een internaat in Roermond gewoond, alvorens hij in Nijmegen naar kostschool ging. Waarschijnlijk heeft hij deze school niet afgemaakt, want op 4-9-1915 is Piet bij opa op het Levendaal 26 in Leiden gaan wonen.
Vader, stiefmoeder en broer Thieu zaten toen in NI. Zus Anna heeft kostschool in NIjmegen wel afgemaakt.
