Na het huwelijk van Jan en Fien Vanlier Ottenheim pachten zij in Griendsveen een boerderij van de N.V. Maatschappij van de Griendt's Landexploitatie, bekend onder de naam "De Boerderij". Alle kinderen, behalve Joseph no 9 zijn in Griendsveen, gemeente Horst, geboren.

Aangenomen mag worden dat een van de redenen is geweest dat het gezin Vanlier- Ottenheim op 02-11-1914 verhuisde van Griendsveen naar Helden- Beringe, dat de meeste opbrengsten van de boerderij naar de Maatschappij gingen. De kinderen gingen in Helden-Dorp naar school. De jongsten, Mien, Wim en Ben ( no 6, 7, 8 ) gingen later naar de lagere school in Helden-Beringe

Op 28-04-1924 verhuisde het gezin van Helden-Beringe naar Weert waar zij de boerderij genaamd "Kernies'' pachten op het gehucht Hushoven. De zonen hebben zich in de begin jaren voornamelijk beziggehouden met het dichten, egaliseren en ontginnen van ca. 6 ha moeras, bos en heide percelen die bij de boerderij hoorden.

Einde jaren dertig ging de boerderij in vlammen op. Fien Vanlier - Ottenheim en dochter Truus no 4 zijn tijdelijk bij hun zoon Andre no 2, die in 1934 met Miet Beelen was gehuwd en vlakbij woonde, ondergebracht. In de tegenover gelegen schuur werd een nood onderkomen gebouwd. De boerderij werd herbouwd.

In 1940 kocht Jan en Fien Vanlier - Ottenheim een boerderij annex café te Weert-Boshoven. Deze boerderij werd tot een dubbele woonblok verbouwd. De nieuwbouw werd betrokken door Jan en Fien Vanlier Ottenheim met hun dochter Truus en hun jongste zoon Ben. Deze laatste nam het pand in 1959 over. Het oude woongedeelte werd tot eind 1941 bewoond door het gezin Graat en Tina Vanlier - Houben, mijn ouders, daarna door het gezin Vanlier - Moonen no3. deze verhuisden in Oktober 1958 naar Someren, waarna in novemder 1958 mijn ouders, Vanlier - Houben, het pand weer betrok
