Hij werd gedoopt te Helden op 23.12.1648 met als doopgetuigen Henricus Smollers, Petrus Verhaegh en Petronella Roefs. Hij studeerde te Keulen, alwaar hij op 19.12.1670 de tonsuur en de lage wijdingen ontving. Op 17.12.1672 werd hij tot subdiaken en op 18.3.1673 tot diaken gewijd. Op 1.4.1673 volgde zijn priesterwijding. Zoals zijn broeder Sebastianus, was ook Leonardus tot de orde der predikheren toegetreden. Hij was doctor in de Theologie en hij overleed te Keulen op 19.11.1720 als provinciaal van de Duitse orde der Dominikanen. In het sterfregister van Helden werd zijn overlijden door zijn broer Joannes ingeschreven, die echter geen melding maakte van het feit dat het zijn broer betrof. "(1720) Decima nona Novembris obiit Colonia admoRo Pater Leonardus Knippenbergh ordinis Praedicatorum 550 Theologia Magister, ac per Provinciam Teutoniae ejusdem Ordinis provincialiso."
