Notes about johanna gommans

Johanna kwam uit een boerengezin met zeven kinderen. Ook haar grootouders waren boeren. Op de boerderij werd veel gezongen tijdens het werk op het veld en in de avondschemering. Haar grote repertoire bouwde ze vooral thuis op, veel liederen leerde ze daar van haar oudere zuster. Maar ook op spinningen, gezellige bijeenkomsten waar men in vroeger tijden inderdaad het spinnewiel mee naar toe nam, en waar gezongen en voorgedragen werd, leerde ze liederen.
Johanna kende meerdere lange liederen: zo schreef ze eens alle 124 strofen van de zogenoemde 'Lange Passie' ('Hier is het begin van bitter lijden', opnamen 42123 en 42201) voor Ate Doornbosch uit, op een vijf meter lange telstrook van een kasregister. Toen Johanna eenmaal getrouwd was en zelf acht kinderen had, bleef ze veel zingen. Als er bij haar opnames gemaakt werden schreef ze van te voren alle liederen helemaal op; ze wilde bij het zingen geen fouten maken
