    De Pionier is op 20 september 1896 in het Goereese Gat gezonken bij terugkeer van een lange zoutreis. Schipper was de 26-jarige Ary de Waard. Alle bemanningsleden konden het schip tijdig verlaten met de scheepsboot, maar de schipper bleef op zijn post en dat is hem noodlottig geworden.
    Schipper Arij de Waard was op 20 september 1896 op de sloep Pionier met een grote vangst zoute vis aan boord op de terugreis. In het Goereese Gat is de sloep "lek gestoten en gezonken". Een schipper behoorde zo lang mogelijk op zijn sloep te blijven en Arij weigerde ondanks het aandringen van zijn bemanningsleden, zijn schip te verlaten. Hij verdronk in het Goereese Gat.
