Vermeld vanaf 1077 als Graaf, vanaf 1081 als Graaf van Meaux en Brie. Hij was één van de militaire leiders van de Eerste Kruistocht 1096-1099. Tijdens de Slag om Antiochië deserteerde hij, maar werd door zijn vrouw Adela teruggestuurd in 1101.Hij bezocht Jeruzalem, maar sneuvelde in de strijd rond Ramleh.
