Voordat hij door keizer Hendrik IV tot bisschop van Utrecht benoemd werd, was hij domproost van Straatsburg.
Ondanks het feit dat hij een aanhanger was van de keizer tijdens de investituurstrijd, moest hij in 1101 graaf Floris II van Holland als zijn leenheer erkennen. Bovendien erkende de opvolger van de keizer, Hendrik V, Hendrik van Zutphen als graaf van de eerder aan het bisdom in leen gegeven Friese graafschappen Oostergo en Westergo.
Burchard werd begraven in de Dom van Utrecht.
