    Hij wenste Heylwig van Rothem als echtgenote. Haar voogd, Herman van Cuyk verzette zich als tegenstander van de Graven van Holland daartegen. Als reactie greep Floris de Zwarte naar de wapenen, plunderde Utrecht (Bisschop was Hermans broer Andreas) en bezette Lexmond. Tijdens de jacht ontmoette Floris onverwacht de broers Herman en Godfried van Cuyk en bij die schermutseling werd Floris vermoord. De daders werden in opdracht van Keizer Lotharius III, oom van Floris de Zwarte in de ban. Hun slot werd tot de laatste steen gesloopt.
