KNIPPENBERG Julian William "Knip", went to be with the Lord on Sept. 24, 2006. He was born in Cincinnati, OH on April 25, 1916, the second of three sons of Harry Knippenberg and Mary Ann Huston Knippenberg. Orphaned at 11, he lived in the German General Protestant Orphan Home until the age of 15. He "escaped" the orphan home in 1931 and found a home on the farm of Flossie and E.A Martin near Burlington, KY, where he worked and attended Florence High School. He graduated in the Spring of 1936 and came to Lexington to enroll at Transylvania that fall. After his second year at Transylvania, he transferred to the University of Kentucky. During World War II, he served three years with the 117th Armored Infantry Battalion of the 12th Armored Division as a tank and gunnery trainer. After the war he returned to the University of Kentucky to earn his Bachelor of Science and Commerce degree in August of 1945. He passed the Kentucky Bar Exam in 1946 prior to earning a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Kentucky in June of 1947. He began practicing law in Lexington in October of 1946 with the firm Boehl, Stopher, Graves, and Diendoerfer where he remained for 19 years. He served as acting trial commissioner in Fayette County Quarterly Court. He served as chairman of the Lexington-Fayette County Planning Commission from 1963 until 1966.He was admitted and qualified as an attorney and counselor of the Supreme Court of the United States on April 3, 1961. In 1964 he left Boehl, Stopher, Graves, and Diendoerfer and formed a partnership with James S. Carroll. They dissolved their partnership in 1981 when "Jimmy" moved to Mercer County. He continued to practice until he closed his final case and retired after 58 years of practice, in the fall of 2004. He was instrumental in the reorganization of the Young Democrats and served in the election campaign of A. B. Chandler. He was campaign chairman for Wendell Ford in 1970 and was appointed Commissioner of the Alcohol Beverage Control Board in 1971 where he served for five years under Governors Wendell Ford and Julian Carroll. He joined eight other men to found the Woodland Avenue Baptist Church in 1961. He demonstrated his Christian faith daily, setting an example for his children and grandchildren. He served for 20 years as an officer and past Director of the Kentucky Easter Seals organization. He wrote the articles of incorporation for the Eastern Kentucky Multiple Sclerosis Chapter. He established and incorporated various Little League Baseball leagues and the first Dixie Babe Ruth Baseball League in Lexington. He is survived by his daughter, Marian L. Duncan of Carlisle, Julian William Knippenberg Jr. and wife June of North Middletown, Craig Christopher Knippenberg and wife Claudia of Pearl River, Louisiana and Glenn Knippenberg and wife Mary of Nicholasville, KY. He was preceded in death by Alice "Mickey" Knippenberg, wife of more than 58 years. He was also predeceased by an older brother Harold Knippenberg and his wife Evelyn of Cincinnati and a younger brother Claude J. Knippenberg and his wife Rosie, of Cincinnati. He was blessed with 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 13 great, great grandchildren. He had numerous special nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their appreciation and thanks for the many loving and compassionate acts of kindness extended to him during his life by his friends and neighbors, to the doctors who cared for him and to the ladies whose assistance and care helped him remain living in his home. Visitation will be 5-9 p.m., Wed, at WHITEHALL FUN -ERAL HOME on North Limestone Street. The funeral will be at Whitehall Funeral Home, at 10:30 a.m., Thu, Sept. 28, 2006, conducted by Reverend Walter Price with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Lexington Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons Steve Duncan, Cecil Duncan, Mark Duncan, Christopher Knipp -enberg, Clay Knippenberg, Duane Knippenberg and Darin Knippenberg. Honorary pallbearers will be Darin Knippenberg, Stanley Demos, David "Crutch" Lagrew, John Sutterfield, Chester Hager, Justice James Keller, Judge Armand Angelucci Judge David Hays and Doug Bishop. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY 40504.
