   LifeSketch: Juw was a Frisian chieftain who earned fame in the rebellion against Albrecht of Bavaria, the count of Holland. He was chosen as the "potestate of Friesland to represent the Frieslanders in their struggle. He advised luring the enemy into the land. He and his men were defeated at Schoterzijl where Juw was slain on Aug. 29, 1396. About 1400 Frieslanders were killed and Count Albrecht became lord of Friesland. However by 1400 the Frieslanders managed to throw him out and make a treaty that removed him as lord of Friesland. War had come about because of conflict based on class in Friesland. The "Fetkopers" were so called because it means "fat buyers" -- people who had much and could buy fat or live off the fat of the land. The "Skieringers" were called that because it means "speakers -- because they first spoke up in discussions, then protest, before taking action against the richer class. These two groups then engaged inn a bloody civil war that lasted for over a century (1350--1498) that ended the freedom of the Friessland people as they became subject to Saxons.
