Notes about Johannes Meulesteen

Eigenaar wollenstoffenfabriek

Op 29 maart 1906 vroeg Johannes Meulesteen vergunning voor oprichting van een Lijstgarenfabriek met kunstwolmalerij onder de handelsnaam J. Meulensteen. De fabriek lag aan de Oude Langestraat en grenzend aan de Veldhovensestraat.

Het gebouw, geheel van steen en met pannen gedekt, had een 25 meter hoge schoorsteen. Hierin bevond zich het ketelhuis waarin een stoomketel met een verwarmingscapaciteit voor 22 m². De machinekamer met een stoomketel met 15 pk vermogen en werkplaats, met gasverlichting. Verder werden alle benodigdheden verzameld voor lijstgarenfabriek en wolmalerij en bewaard in dit pand.

Op 5 januari 1909 werd J. Meulensteen failliet verklaard in Breda. Na zijn faillissement werd het complex verkocht als bouwterrein. Helaas is Johannes een paar maanden later op 14 mei van dat jaar gestorven. Misschien heeft het faillissement, zijn "hart en ziel" het overlijden bespoedigd? 

Aan de Veldhovenring 90-92-94 staat het pand wat als enige is overgebleven van het complex dat Johannes Meulensteen kocht in 1880. Na diens faillissement in 1909 werd het complex verkocht als bouwterrein. Het oudste gebouw bleef echter behouden en is vervolgens gesplitst in de drie huidige panden. Het zadeldak, dat over het gehele perceel doorloopt, bevindt zich nog in de originele staat. Dit pand dateert van vóór 1640, oorspronkelijk was het een boerderij.
