Maria Antonia Hagenaar was geboren 5 maart 1900 in Djokjakarta . Zij huwde in 1930 met de chileen Neftalí Ricardo Reyes, beter bekend als de schrijver Pablo Neruda. Pauline Slot, haar biograaf, ontdekte dat zij in april 1945 een maand in kamp Westerbork zat. Toen werd het kamp bevrijd door de geallieerden. Zie dit:

Het vertrek gaat niet door, en in Den Haag maakt Maruca de hongerwinter door. Het contact met haar moeder op Java is dan al jaren onmogelijk: zij zit in kampen, en zal niet lang voor de capitulatie van de Japanners overlijden in kamp Tjideng, bij Batavia.Het huwelijk met Neruda heeft ervoor gezorgd dat Maruca die kampen ontloopt, en de bloedige bersiap die daarop volgde – een onderbelicht stuk van onze geschiedenis. Maar helemaal ontsnappen doet ze niet, want als vrouw van een Chileen is zij in het bezette Nederland een vreemdelinge, met de Chileense nationaliteit.

Het zal ook om die reden zijn dat ze op 21 maart 1945 door de Duitsers naar Westerbork wordt gebracht: als Austausch-Kandidat, om geruild te worden tegen gevangen genomen hoge Duitse militairen. Ditmaal is die ruil niet vrijwillig, maar gedwongen. Wat Maruca, en ook de Duitsers, niet weten is dat haar huwelijk dan al ontbonden is, onder de Mexicaanse wet.
