Notes about Pieter Vanderyse

In 1180 kreeg Damme van graaf Filips van de Elzas stadsrechten. De waterweg tussen Brugge en Damme zorgde dat Damme van begin 13de tot einde 15de eeuw een welvarende havenstad was. Nog steeds bewondert men in Damme de gebouwen uit die tijd.

Damme staat ook bekend als literaire stad. Jacob van Maerlant, de Middelnederlandse auteur heeft er zijn standbeeld en Charles de Coster liet zijn Tijl Uilenspiegel in Damme geboren worden. In het kielzog van deze twee figuren verwierf Damme ook bekendheid als Boekendorp. De boekhandels zijn in Damme niet meer weg te denken en ook de boekenmarkten zijn een vaste waarde.

En dan is er nog de rijke fauna en flora. Waardevolle natuurgebieden en overwinterende ganzen sieren het landschap. Damme leent zich uitstekend voor een gezonde wandeling. De landwegen tussen de polders en de dijken van de Damse vaart brengen de bezoekers tot rust. Met de Maerlantroute en de Riante Polderroute kunt u de streek ook met de fiets verkennen.

Het stadhuis dateert van 1464 en is in gotische stijl opgetrokken. De nisbeelden stellen Filips van de Elzas, Johanna en Margareta van Constantinopel, Filips van Thiette, Karel de Stoute en Margareta van York voor. Op de rechterhoek hangen 2 justitiestenen. Het intact stadsuurwerk dateert van 1459. In de Vierschaerezaal en de Raadzaal van het stadhuis bevinden zich merkwaardige balksleutels.
