Op het einde van de 19 de eeuw was er opnieuw een verhoogde zuigelingen- en kindersterfte.

Ook het aantal doodgeborenen bleef schrikbarend hoog ( ongeveer 5% ). Het lot was ongemeen hard voor het gezin van August en Amelia.

Van de 15 kinderen, zouden er slechts 7 de meerderjarige leeftijd bereiken. Vijf doodgeboren kinderen, twee zuigelingen ( Camiel en Maria-Louïsa ) en de vierjarige Eugenie werden ten grave gedragen.
