De Derde Orde van 1289 tot de 20e eeuw

 

De regel van paus Nicolaas zorgde voor een innige en juridische verbondenheid tussen de eerste en de derde orde. Op de lange duur leidde dit tot een te grote afhankelijkheid van de derde orde van de eerste.

In de 17e en 18e eeuw raakte de derde orde in een crisis verzeild. De orde omschreef zich in vage termen als instituut, broederschap, gezelschap, college e.d. De juridische status van de leden werd ook onduidelijk. Ze werden soms als middenweg tussen religieuzen en leken beschouwd.

In de 20e eeuw kwam een proces van vernieuwing op gang. Dit was deels de vrucht van sociale hervorming als nasleep van de Franse Revolutie gepaard aan het begin van de Industriële Revolutie. Paus Leo XIII trok zich de situatie aan. Hij wilde de derde orde betrekken in zijn streven naar sociale hervorming. Hij gaf ze in 1883 zelfs een nieuwe regel.
