      Het was een havenstad zonder haven. Het had een "rede"die niet geschikt was. Toch telde de stad vele grootschippers en zeer vele reders en kooplieden, die grote welvaart kenden. Hindeloopen bleef ondanks de externe contacten toch steeds een eigen cultuur behouden, met eigen kunst en taal. In de loop van de 18de eeuw ging de stad sterk achteruit.
