Flintofts Obituary as written by Yolanda (excerpt)
Margaret Hoefsmit June 20, 1919 - April 2, 2009 - Born in The Hague, Holland. Margaret, married Harry Hoefsmit in 1942. They moved to America, finally settling in Bellevue, Washington. Margaret was a wonderful woman with many friends. She was small and spirited, youthful and positive. She charmed us all with her sweet Dutch accent. Harry passed in 1994. Margaret lived a long, happy life. She is survived by her three adult children, Trudy Ribacchi, Peter Hoefsmit, Yola Case.
Her name was Greta, Gre, Margaret, Oma but to me she was my Mama. I used to love to hear my father call her name Gre. He always said it with such tenderness and respect. I always wondered as a child why my mother would choose the name Margaret over Greta or Gre. As I grew older I saw that the name Margaret was a perfect fit. It has the respectability and class that she had. Yes, Margaret Hoefsmit was her name - but she was always Mama to me.
Greta grew up the fourth of six children. Greta learned fortitude as she established her place in the family. The position of middle child was not an easy one but it shaped her into the person she was to become. The occupation of Holland by Germany during World War II had a lot to do with the direction their lives would take. The future didn·Äôt look too promising to the young couple, Greta Pico and Harry Hoefsmit, who were engaged in 1939 then married in 1942. Trudy was born in 1943, Peter in 1946 and Yola in 1950.
In 1955, Gre and Harry and their young family sailed off to Canada, bordering the object of his dreams - the United States of America. In Canada, Greta, Gre became Margaret. The name she carried the rest of her life. The Canada years were not easy years. They were years of hard work and many new challenges. Margaret missed her family and the security of life in Holland. A blessing arrived in 1955 - Tante Terry and Oom Ton Haga, Margaret·Äôs youngest sister and her husband and the arrival of Tante Ans, Harry·Äôs youngest sister Ann Hoefsmit (Pattison). A little bit of Holland arrived along with the freshness of their youth. Margaret·Äôs homesickness was calmed by the arrival of these young sisters.
Four years in Calgary, Canada and again Harry and Margaret and Trudy, Peter and Yola were on the move. Harry·Äôs dream was to be fulfilled in the United States, in Whittier near Los Angeles, California. By now Trudy was in High School and it was the 1960s. It was a promising and exciting time. Many of Margaret and Harry·Äôs dreams were fulfilled then. Their first television set, new furniture, a brand new home they designed themselves with a view of the California Mountains and a Catholic education to their children. Trudy married J David Ribacchi in 1964. Yola followed in 1968, marrying Richard Case. After marriage comes the baby carriage, and there were four - Alex ·Äô67, Richard ·Äô69, Lia ·Äô70 and Alicia ·Äô71. Two each for Trudy and Yola. By then Peter was on the East Coast furthering his studies to PHD. Yola added Marissa in ·Äô76 and Michael in ·Äô77. Peter married Barbara Hinckley in 1975 - then the last two grandchildren arrived - Christina in ·Äò80 and Monica in ·Äò86.
During this time Trudy and Peter·Äôs families were on the move many times. Margaret and Harry would visit them regularly but one visit was different. A trip to visit Peter and his family in Seattle in 1982 was different than other trips. This one birthed a new dream. At ages 62 and 64 they were again dreaming. This time their dreams were fed by memories of Holland - its damp, crisp air, its large expansive waterways and the green, green foliage; Seattle beckoned. Margaret and Harry moved to Bellevue, Washington - a dream house on Somerset Drive. It was their piece of heaven and they were so happy with and proud of their new home.
Margaret had many good friends. She was a good and loyal friend herself. Small, spirited and charming with her sweet Dutch accent, she fascinated us all. In 1994 Harry passed away and Margaret built a new life in Issaquah. Margaret lived a long, healthy life. She even lived to see her youngest grandchild reach adulthood. God also blessed her with a whole new generation, her five great-grandchildren, Andrew, Angela, Christopher, Jonathan and Ryan. To her three children Margaret·Äôs passing leaves a void in their hearts. I hear my mama say: kleine liefelingen (little darlings) My Mama! Yola Case.
