Josephus started on bicycles, motorcycles and cars. From around 1903 he had a wholesaler of bicycles, motorcycles and parts in the Kuiperstraat, the largest in the Netherlands at the time. From 1904 he was importer for the whole of the Netherlands of the Peugeot bicycle brand. The company, van der Schoot-Hoofs, moved to Bosscheweg (Tivolistraat) around 1930 and existed until 1953. Josephus was co-founder and director of A Hovers (Hovers Construction). From 1915 he also owned De Looiersbeurs for some time.
